Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa
Completion of Projects on the Island of Praslin

January 24, 2007

A team of United States Navy personnel from the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) has, in cooperation with the Government of the Seychelles and the Seychellois people, completed two construction projects on the island of Praslin, costing an estimated 210,000 U.S. Dollars, or almost 1.2 million Seychelles Rupees.

The mortuary at Baie St. Anne Hospital was demolished and a new, larger and more efficient facility has been built in its place, improving the response capability and preparedness for disasters or tragedies.  Anse La Blague Clinic was completely refurbished and modernized.  A new roof, floor and electrical wiring were installed increasing availability of medical care to the residents of Anse La Blague and Baie St Anne.

The personnel responsible for completion of the projects are known as “Seabees” and are from the U.S. Navy – Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Five (NMCB5).  Seabees are the U.S. Navy’s “Goodwill Ambassadors.”  The Seabees have repeatedly demonstrated their skills as builders working around the world building and improving roads, orphanages and public utilities.

The strong friendship between U.S. Navy Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa and the people of the Seychelles began in 2005 with the refurbishment of the St. Elizabeth Orphanage on Mahe in 2005.  Completion of these two projects on Praslin represents a continuation of this friendship as well as the U.S. Government’s commitment to assisting the people of the Seychelles.
